Diary kept by John Hoyt of Dexter, Me. during a 1849 voyage to San Francisco, Calif. via the bark Ann Smith (he is at New Haven, Conn. in the first entry). There is also correspondence John Hoyt sent to his wife Elizabeth back in Dexter, Me., 1849-1857. San Francisco Fire in letter Dec 25 1849. Farming at the Mission of San Jose, ranching/farming at Marysville (Dry Creek), Calif. and gold digging at Hansonville. Among the correspondence for 1854 is a handwritten copy of "I don't get my 'pile' by a disconsolate miner."
